Mental Strength for Train Drivers: The Attention@DB Programme

Train drivers play a crucial role in rail transport, ensuring safety and punctuality. Their job demands high concentration and emotional resilience. To support them, DB Training, in collaboration with Awaris, developed the Attention@DB (Deutsche Bahn) programme, which strengthens focus, stress management, and emotional regulation.

Strengthening Attention for Safety

Each year, DB Training qualifies and tests 26,000 train drivers. While technical systems support safety, human skills like mindfulness and concentration are trainable. The training programme addresses key challenges:

  • Maintaining focus during long shifts
  • Effectively managing stress
  • Regulating emotions such as anger and frustration
  • Ensuring clear communication in critical, high-risk situations

A Two-Stage Learning Journey

The training programme integrates digital and in-person learning over two days, separated by a 6-8 week self-study phase. This structure enhances long-term retention.

Day 1: Participants focus on stress management, mindfulness, and attention. Small-group discussions foster trust and engagement.

Self-Learning Phase: Using an app and workbook, participants apply learned techniques in daily life and work. Topics include distraction, emotions, routines, attention control, and communication. Optional coaching calls offer additional support.

Day 2: Participants reconvene to reflect on experiences and deepen their skills. Discussions focus on communication, emotional regulation, and real-world railway scenarios.

Building Confidence and Operational Safety

The training programme fosters self-efficacy (belief in one’s ability to handle challenges) and self-regulation (managing emotions under pressure). These skills enhance proactive behaviour and reduce errors, strengthening overall rail safety.

Scientific Validation and Lasting Impact

Mindfulness research highlights its effectiveness in high-focus professions like rail transport. Studies show mindfulness training improves attention, reduces cognitive lapses, and enhances emotional resilience.

The pilot program confirmed these findings:

  • 93% successfully integrated new habits into daily work
  • 74% improved attention control, reducing workplace distractions
  • 93% intended to continue mindfulness practices long-term

These results demonstrate the programme’s success in fostering sustainable behavioural change.

Award-Winning Innovation

The HR Excellence Awards jury recognised Attention@DB as an outstanding HR initiative, awarding it in the “Learning and Development” category.

To wrap up, the Attention@DB programme enhances both safety and employee well-being. By training focus, emotional regulation, and communication, train drivers gain practical tools that benefit their professional and personal lives. This initiative is a significant step toward creating a safer, more efficient, and health-conscious work environment.
